Types and differences of real wood veneer

Wood creates a cozy living atmosphere. Whether solid wood furniture, decorative objects made of wood and, last but not least, room lighting: the material wood directly touches on our age-old instincts for well-being .

With our lights made of real wood veneer, we make full use of the advantages of wooden veneer. The extra thin layer of wood can be easily formed into a lampshade or light column.

A cozy glow of warm light pours into the room through the delicate layer of wood. The veneer, with its grain ranging from fine to expressive patterns, stimulates the imagination. Ornaments and figures give the lamp and room a magical character . Added to this is the light scent of the wood warmed by the light.

Veneer wood is also ideal for the lamp base, for example in a bedside lamp with a textile lampshade. Oak veneer, among other things, has proven to be a type of wood that harmonizes well with most lamp designs.

Such modern and at the same time timeless designed lights made from the traditional material wood for the apartment interior immediately raise questions - especially about the types and differences of real wood veneer.

Why real wood veneer at all?

Veneer wood is the cheaper alternative to solid wood. This financially advantageous effect is particularly noticeable when it comes to furniture. Self-adhesive wood veneer applied to the surfaces of cheaper substrate materials such as chipboard or medium-density fiberboard (MDF) makes furniture and other wooden objects appear as if they were made entirely of solid wood.

Likewise, the use of self-adhesive wood veneer makes it possible to create artistic, decorative designs or inlays that solid wood can never offer.

We also benefit from the advantages of real wood veneer in the design of our lights. In addition to a variety of natural grain effects, the individual types of wood contribute their characteristic features.

The types and differences of real wood veneer

When it comes to the types of wood veneer in our collections, we focus on certain woods with varied properties:
  • Oak
  • walnut
  • Pine
  • poplar
  • Olive ash

This means we already have more than enough options for our lights in a creative variety.

Oak veneer

Although available in several colors - from light to brown and reddish brown to dark brown - oak wood always exudes calm. It has a robust wooden structure with intense grain. Oak wood often also has knotholes, which are not at all annoying but also have a decorative effect. The insensitive and largely warp-resistant wood is perfect for oak veneer .

Walnut veneer

The warm brown of European walnut has a powerful grain. A lampshade made of thin walnut veneer looks impressive with its pattern even without lighting. When illuminated from within, a pleasantly soft glow of light spreads through it.

Pine veneer

Pine wood is a delicate light brown color. With its wavy pattern of annual rings and numerous significantly darker, mostly small knotholes, stone pine veneer conveys a cheerful flair. The scent of pine wood is known for its sleep-inducing effect, which is why lights with a shade made of pine wood veneer are particularly suitable for the bedroom.

Poplar veneer

Grey-white to light brown poplar wood offers a very special and fine grain on a plain surface. When illuminated, a lampshade made of poplar veneer is reminiscent of amber with small plant inclusions.

Olive veneer

Olive ash veneer often has a grain that appears drawn. Together with the warm light to medium brown basic tone of the wood, olive ash veneer is particularly suitable for illuminated objects such as a lampshade.

Can you paint wood veneer?

The presentation of individual types of wood veneer has shown what a great artist nature already is. Nevertheless, the question regularly arises as to whether you can paint veneer according to your own ideas. The answer is yes, as long as the special features of real wood veneer are taken into account:

Is the veneer still stuck?

First, make sure the veneer is still firmly bonded to its substrate. If necessary, fill holes or dents with a little filler or wood glue.

Do not sand the wood before painting the veneer

In all types of wood veneer, the layers are very thin – a maximum of 6 mm. Sanding can therefore easily damage the thin layer of wood.

Before painting the veneer, it is better to clean the surface with a little cleaning spirit and a soft sponge. This way the color will also hold well.

Tape off neighboring areas

Please mask off adjacent areas that should not be painted - ideally with masking tape that can be easily removed.

Prime veneer wood

Primers in the appropriate color of the wood veneer types protect the wood and allow paint to adhere well to it.

Which color is best for painting veneer?

If you want a bright color with a shiny surface, we recommend one of the popular acrylic varnishes. It is important that you choose a varnish that is actually suitable for wood.

If you prefer a matt surface, we recommend chalk paint. It is also available in different colors, matching the typical powdery consistency of chalk paint, which, by the way, adheres excellently to unsanded veneer. Chalk paint is also ideal for trendy shabby chic.
