Pine oil and its effects

Zirbenöl und seine Wirkung - Leuchtnatur

The Stone Pine wants to reach for the sky. This pine species with its gnarled growth is only found at altitudes above 1300 m. In the Alpine region, it withstands even the most adverse weather conditions. Neither strong frost, snow, nor wind can harm this robust conifer. This inherent strength is also reflected in products made from Stone Pine.

Stone pine wood is particularly rich in resin and contains an abundance of fragrant essential oils. With intense sunlight in the high mountains, the tree produces a lot of it. With stone pine oil, we bring the scent of the mountain forest into our living spaces.

How Stone Pine Oil is Made

Stone pine oil is extracted from the needles and branches of the stone pine, as well as from its cones. About 100 kg of plant material are needed for one liter of pure stone pine oil. The valuable essential oils are extracted by steam distillation. At temperatures just below boiling point, steam is generated, separating the essential oils from other components. The temperature always remains below 100 ºC. The result is a highly concentrated, fragrant distillate with an oily consistency. This gentle process fully preserves all valuable ingredients.

Incidentally, no trees are felled for the production of stone pine oil. Usually, branches, needles, and cones that accumulate during wood processing in furniture production are used.

Valuable Ingredients in Stone Pine Oil

Stone pine oil contains, among other things, 125 different terpenes, which we perceive as intense fragrances. Plants produce terpenes from water, sunlight, and carbon dioxide. In addition to terpenes, stone pine oil offers a wealth of other valuable ingredients, only some of which are mentioned here:

  • a-Pinene
  • Cineol
  • Limonene
  • Camphene
  • Myrcene
  • Pinosylvin

Stone pine oil is much more than just the sum of its individual components. It is precisely the synergistic interaction of many different substances that gives stone pine oil its effect.

How to Make Stone Pine Oil Yourself

Stone pine oil is actually obtained by steam distillation. But stone pine oil can also be made yourself with a cold-infused macerate.

For this, you need stone pine needles and a neutral oil such as jojoba oil or almond oil. Simply fill stone pine needles into a screw-top jar and pour oil over them until the needles are completely covered. Shake once, leave in a dark place for four to six weeks, and finally strain through a fine sieve.
